Titans agree to deal with Bennie Logan

The Titans added some size in advance of the start of their offseason program.

The Giants were 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position. They’re .125 average (3 for 24) batting with runners in scoring position is the worst in the majors.

“Our guys were battling,” Holland said. “It was a pitcher’s duel going in and he lasted longer than I did. Just processing this game, they were hitting the ball. They made contact, found some holes, hit mistakes.”

The Giants activated RHP Tyler Beede, and the 24-year-old right-hander will start Tuesday’s game for his major league debut. Beede, a 2014 first-round pick, will pitch in place of RHP Johnny Cueto, whose start was pushed back to Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the Giants optioned RHP Roberto Gomez to Triple-A Sacramento.

Diamondbacks: OF Steven Souza Jr., on the DL with a right pectoral strain, complained of discomfort Sunday after playing in a simulated game in which he homered twice in seven at-bats and threw from over 100 feet. An MRI showed fluid in the area of the injury. “This is part of the process,” Lovullo said. “I do not consider this a setback whatsoever.” … 3B Jake Lamb (left shoulder AC joint sprain) took dry swings and did some running and throwing Monday. He’ll ramp up baseball activities Tuesday.

Giants: RHP Jeff Samardzija (right pectoral strain) pitched three innings in a simulated game and is expected to throw make a rehab start later this week. He could be activated next week.

Picking 12th and 22nd, they won’t have a shot at him. Even if General Manager Brandon Beane gets on the horn with his old boss and makes a bold move, they still might not, if the Browns end up taking Darnold first overall.

But the fact they’re going to be ready to get into that range (they’re also bringing Josh Rosen and Baker Mayfield to Buffalo for visits) suggests that Beane’s doing everything he can to solve the quarterback problem for Buffalo for the long-term.

“If you saw me, I was cheering, cheering, cheering,” Murray said. “He’s 40 years old. What do you want from him? He already paid his dues. He’s a future Hall of Famer. He’s won championships. So it’s like that’s just a bonus for us. Manu could be with his family and kids. But he’s showing the love and passion he has for the game, and he’s here with us.”

Eric Reid to visit the Bengals

A month into free agency, Eric Reid is finally drawing some interest.

Reid, the safety whose lack of offers has led some to suggest he’s being blackballed for kneeling during the national anthem, will visit the Bengals, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The 26-year-old Reid has played his entire five-year NFL career with the 49ers. He became a free agent this offseason and there were no reports of any teams showing interest, even though he’s been a starter throughout his career.

Kyle Soppe: Ohtani has been simply amazing and may be in the process of ruining our perception of what a successful rookie season looks like (football fans saw this with the 2014 WR draft class), but I like this question as not all rookies need to steal all of the headlines to be considered a very early season success. For me, Jack Flaherty was outstanding in his lone appearance (5 innings, 1 earned run, and 9 strikeouts in a no decision against the Brewers) and positioned himself to be a worthwhile fantasy asset when (not if) he returns to The Show.

Sure, it was only one start, but the Brewers failed to make contact on nearly 37 percent of their swings against the rookie and his ability to keep the ball on the ground appeared legit to my eye. Fantasy baseball is a marathon, not a sprint, so don’t lose track of the big picture and try to make room for Flaherty sooner than later.

The meaning, inescapably, is this: Manziel thinks that the Browns should have known that he wasn’t going to study film, that he wasn’t going to work hard, and that he was simply going to wing it. To understand the problems with these remarks, it’s important to consider the broader context that emerged in early 2014.

Manziel worked very hard before the 2014 draft to create the impression that he’s a hard worker. He specifically refrained from the Super Bowl-week car wash, during which he would have made tens of thousands of dollars promoting products at Radio Row, because he supposedly was fully focused on football. He routinely declined interviews prior to the draft for that same reason. His trip to the Nike facility in Oregon raised eyebrows because it represented a rare break from the full-football focus.

Four years later, Manziel essentially wants to adjust the “fool me once, shame on you” adage to “fool me once, shame on me.” He fooled the Browns, and now — in that one isolated but fully accurate portion of his interview — he blamed the Browns for getting fooled.

“If Cleveland did any of their homework they would have known I wasn’t a guy who came in every day and watched film,” Manziel said. “I wasn’t a guy who really knew the X’s and O’s of football.”

Colts GM Chris Ballard shockingly against Josh McDaniels rule, which fails to pass

In the aftermath of the Josh McDaniels fiasco with the Colts earlier this offseason, the NFL was expected to pass a new rule that would allow teams to officially hire away coaches working for playoff teams. Surprisingly, the rule wasn’t enacted at the NFL owners meetings this week. Even more surprising is that Colts general manager Chris Ballard wasn’t in favor of the rule change.

On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Star’s Stephen Holder reported that Ballard said he was not a proponent of a new rule.

And that playoff team who has worked their (butt) off, they’re trying to win, man. The rules are in place to protect them. It’s already a distraction, but now you’re creating a whole other issue.

It’s surprising to hear Ballard talk this way because of just how much the current rules screwed him over. On Jan. 15, CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported that McDaniels was a virtual lock to be the Colts’ next coach. But because the Patriots were in the middle of a playoff run, McDaniels couldn’t officially take the job — not until the Patriots’ season ended, which didn’t happen until the Super Bowl when they lost a heartbreaker to Eagles. Two days later, the Colts announced the hiring, even scheduling an introductory press conference. Later that day, McDaniels shockingly decided to stay with the Patriots. Because he hadn’t signed a contract with the Colts, he had the ability to spurn the Colts without any repercussions — besides his reputation taking a hit, of course.

As for Jinnies, he spoke on how enticing the process has been for him.

They were unlike anything I’ve ever been to. I’m used to getting a call after or an email, he said. This one was about three weeks long and we had a bunch of rehearsals in between and an extensive interview process, but it was really humbling and amazing to be invited every time you came back.

But it was all worth it as the two were part of the 40 cheerleaders chosen out of 76 finalists.

None of this has helped. The league’s leaders aren’t sitting by idly, instead planning to assemble head coaches and special-teams coordinators to craft a solution — which very well could include elimination of the play altogether.

NBA mock draft: Knicks passing on pair of Bridges for another point guard

Well this would cause some uproar in New York.

Not because the position is set with a superstar, but because the Knicks have put so many trade, free agent and draft resources into finding the next lead guard at Madison Square Garden. From selecting Frank Ntilikina in last year’s lottery to trading for Emmanuel Mudiay to watching Trey Burke emerge, the Knicks can’t seem to stick with one plan at the position.

Carter to Knicks

If NBADraft.net’s latest mock draft comes to fruition, we’ll soon add another name to the mix: Alabama scorer Collin Sexton, projected to land with the Knicks with the ninth pick.

Sexton averaged 19.2 points and 3.6 assists playing for an Alabama team that made the NCAA Tournament.

The defensively stout Eagles remain the team to beat, but each of the last 13 Super Bowl winners haven’t repeated. Only 65 percent of the last 26 Super Bowl participants have made the playoffs the next season, and only two have gotten back to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles will have their work cut out for them.

In two games for the Giants last season, Smith completed 21 of 36 passes for 212 yards, one score and no interceptions. The Jets’ 2013 second-round pick, Smith has started 31 games in his five-year career.

Aaron Rodgers.

If the Lions do go that route, it will be interesting to see if it changes Quinn’s plans for Abdullah. The GM previously said DeAndre Levy and Eric Ebron had future roles with the team before cutting both in the offseason. It’s a reminder tomorrow isn’t guaranteed in the NFL.

Regardless of what the backfield rotation looks like, the important thing is that group finally adds long-needed balance to the offense.

I think it’s the way you threaten the defense the most, Patricia said. We need to be balanced from that standpoint.

Jahri Evans wants to play in 2018, but isn’t in a rush to sign

Jahri Evans signed with the Packers in late April last year and started 14 games at right guard for Green Bay in his 12th NFL season before becoming a free agent last month.

Evans hasn’t been linked with any teams so far this offseason, but that’s not because he’s planning to walk off into the sunset. Evans told Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette that he wants to play in 2018 and that he’s keeping the door open to a return to Green Bay while noting that he’s not in a hurry to sign with any team.

In theory, what Polian has described sounds as appealing as non-NFL pro football can get. But all the bells and whistles ascribed to the latest spring pigskin foray mean nothing if the actual on-field action isn’t worthy of drawing viewer attention.

“It’s really a second chance for virtually everyone who wants to play professional football,” Polian said.

We’ll soon learn whether the Alliance itself can remain viable enough to buck the odds and provide that chance, or whether it will follow into the graveyard of past spring disasters.

The Giants made Hankins a second-round pick in 2013. He started 41 games in four seasons in New York and made 150 tackles and 10 sacks.

He played 15 games for the Colts last season, making 44 tackles and two sacks.

“The guys did a good job battling for me,” Wilcox said. “They knew it was my debut tonight. A lot of respect for them battling for me for two periods. I just wanted to give the guys a chance to get back in the game, and they did a good job of doing that.”

The Panthers were cruising but the Sabres mounted a final flurry, scoring two goals 21 seconds apart late in the third period to make it 3-2. Pominville scored on a wrist shot with 4:30 left, and Reinhart scored shortly after.

“Just to be blunt and honest, that was typically what our season was,” coach Phil Housley said. “We couldn’t come out and start on time, and then we get the urgency to push back and get back into a game and make a game of it.”

Rams’ Gurley: Adding Beckham’would be awesome’

Here’s more fuel for the Los Angeles Rams – Odell Beckham rumor mill. When asked about the New York Giants wideout, Rams All-Pro running back Todd Gurley said he’d be excited if his team adds Beckham to its already dynamic offense. If we had him, man, it would be awesome, Gurley said, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. I’d be happy, (quarterback Jared) Goff will be happy, coach (Sean) McVay will be happy, (Rams owner Stan) Kroenke, the whole team would be.

Stanton said he’s going to try to take it day to day.

You don’t worry about the negativity, Stanton said. You don’t worry about, what if I do this What if this guy throws me this What if I have a bad series here All of those what ifs are basically concrete. You’ve got to have a positive mindset to know it doesn’t matter what he’s doing. If I’ve done my homework, if I have the right preparation, it should speak for itself. There will be times but you don’t worry about that.

If you’re looking for an heir apparent, maybe give him the Aaron Rodgers treatment. Let him learn from the best for a couple years and then send him on. But I’m not putting here nor there, I’m just simply saying, Jordan said, according to NFL.com’s Nick Shook before clearly mouthing Lamar Jackson.

Jordan referred to the idea of letting Jackson sit behind 39-year-old Drew Brees, who has two years remaining on his contract, as a plus for the ultra-athletic pass-thrower. Brees has been in New Orleans since 2006 and has yet to see a potential successor as the Saints have drafted just two quarterbacks during his tenure, neither in the first two rounds.

Patricia’s ‘D’ a draw for new Lions LBs Kennard, Jones

The Detroit Lions officially have a pair of new linebackers. The team formalized agreements with Devon Kennard and Christian Jones on Thursday morning, signing both to multi-year contracts.

As far as Matt Patricia and his defense, I watch a lot of film and I really admire what he’s done on the defensive side of the ball for a long time, Kennard said. I’m definitely familiar with him and the scheme that he uses and the success he’s had with New England for so long.

Both players are known for their versatility. Kennard, a 6-foot-4, 256-pound strongside linebacker, spent much of last season lining up along the line of scrimmage as an edge rusher for the New York Giants.

In an interview after the season, he noted that he played just under 50 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and was hoping to find a home where he could have a bigger role.

The Jets picked Cooper up midseason, and he ed in eight games. Originally a third-round pick of the Browns, he was claimed off waivers by the 49ers and ed seven games there.

The Jets obviously think he can at least provide some depth, on the line, after jettisoning Muhammad Wilkerson.

Kendricks, a sixth-year pro, caught five passes. It appears that you already have account on this site associated with.As a senior, he was a consensus All-Big 12 first-team and second-team Academic All-Big 12 choice, and earned honorable mention All- honors from Sports Illustrated after rushing for 1 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Is AJ McCarron even good?

AJ McCarron’s path to unrestricted free agency was far from conventional, but it will likely be a venture for the quarterback that ends up with a chance to compete for a starting role.

Oakland’s signing of Martin, also known as the “Muscle Hamster” due to his 5-foot-9, 223-pound frame, is intriguing.

Martin has been a lead back his entire six-year NFL career, and returning Raiders coach Jon Gruden has said he looks forward to coaching Marshawn Lynch, who is due a $1 million roster bonus on Sunday.

Lynch posted a cryptic tweet on Wednesday.

Still, Gruden could be trying to replicate the Thunder and Lightning backfield from his first tenure as Raiders coach, with Lynch and Martin playing the roles of Tyrone Wheatley and Napoleon Kaufman.

Or Martin could be the Raiders’ new lead back.

Martin, who was born in Oakland and grew up in Stockton, California, told reporters Thursday, “This is my homecoming.” He said that he met Lynch after his rookie year at the Pro Bowl and “can’t wait to pick his brain and watch him and see how he plays the game and practices and all that.” Martin said he will accept whatever role the Raiders need him to play and called Lynch “a great back.” “He’s definitely made his mark in the league.

Based upon the staggering $114 million Bradford has earned in eight previous NFL seasons, Arizona now joins the Rams, Eagles and Vikings as teams who spent big bucks believing he could be a bona fide franchise QB.

There were flashes. Those three clubs saw the prototype size (6-4, 222 pounds), good arm strength and accuracy that helped Bradford dink-and-dunk his way to a then-NFL record 71.6 completion percentage with Minnesota in 2016.

“We have definitely moved on to a different and perhaps more difficult stage of this whole process. We’re thrilled in the amount of progress we’ve made in the last year, in the talent and even the camaraderie that these players have shown,” Hahn said.

Redskins re-sign Pro Bowl LB Zach Brown

After losing multiple key contributors on both sides of the ball, the Washington Redskins are keeping one of their own. According to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington, the Skins have re-signed former Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Brown.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the deal is said to be worth up to $24 million for three seasons.

The former 49er becomes the Browns’ lead back (for now), joining QB Tyrod Taylor in a new-look backfield. However both players could be bridge and/or backup options if GM John Dorsey is able to get Saquon Barkley and/or a rookie quarterback with his pair of top-five draft selections.

Jerick McKinnon agrees to a four-year, $30 million deal with the 49ers.

The Vikings’ third-down back now likely assumes the same role in San Francisco and may get the bigger role he covets given Hyde is on his way out of town. The Niners currently have no clear-cut starter, but Kyle Shanahan tends to employ multiple backs.?

The Lions drafted Whitehead in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Temple. The Lions have added linebackers Devon Kennard and Christian Jones in free agency, making Whitehead expendable.

The addition of Whitehead would be the first on the defensive side of the ball for the Raiders this offseason.

Ninety-five percent of the questions have been football-related with me, or about his personality, Riley says.

Responsibilities at the line of scrimmage, protections, the stuff that’s tough to pick up on film. Communication in the meeting room, installing new plays.

I haven’t been asked a whole lot about the off-the-field stuff. They asked how he handled that stuff behind the scenes. I think they’re interested in the aftermath, when he did have a mistake, how did he handle it and how was it received by the team.

The 30-year-old was due to count $7.7 million against the 2018 salary cap.

Once the Raiders brought in former Packers Pro Bowler Jordy Nelson for a Wednesday night visit, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Crabtree’s roster spot was in jeopardy. Nelson promptly signed a two-year deal Thursday afternoon, leading to Crabtree’s release.

Going back to December, the Las Vegas Review-Journal has repeatedly questioned Crabtree’s staying power, citing locker-room issues.

LB Nigel Bradham, Eagles Grade: C Do the Eagles have to let anyone leave after all? It seemed like Bradham was one of the few concessions Philly would have to make to the realities of the salary cap this offseason, but after the Eagles let Bradham hit the market, they were able to bring him back on a whopper of a deal.

The former Bills starter, whom the Eagles signed to a two-year, $7 million deal two seasons ago after hiring former Buffalo defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, signed a five-year, $40 million deal to stick around in Philadelphia.

That amount of money — $8 million per year — is certainly at the high end of the market for linebackers who don’t rush the quarterback.

The 25-year-old caught 50 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns for the Jets?last season. He stands at 6-6 and weighs in at 262 pounds.??

Seferian-Jenkins was taken in the second round by the Buccaneers in 2014. Tampa Bay cut Seferian-Jenkins in 2016 after he was charged with DUI.

OT Nate Solder is signing with the Giants, per multiple reports.

Analysis: The exodus from New England continues as Big Blue finally reshapes its offensive line. After missing out on Andrew Norwell and watching Weston Richburg depart, the Giants had to make a splash up front. Reports indicate Solder will be the highest-paid left tackle in the NFL now, a reflection of how badly New York needed to address the position after years of struggles with Erick Flowers. The Patriots meanwhile, lose another piece but have shown the ability to find the next man up. – Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz
